Anyone who has managed a restaurant knows that it takes more than a fancy degree to make it successful. Besides the frantic pace and stress, you also have to be a great people person to manage a large staff  “consisting” of chefs, servers,  valets,  as well as diners. This also includes handling unforeseen issues that can pop up without warning on a daily basis. If you face these issues, just go back to the basics with the following tips:

1. Plan Proactively

Every business requires proactive planning and that involves shift scheduling as soon as you open your restaurant’s doors for business.  Make a habit of updating daily tasks and schedules for your staff so that each shift can start off positive and end on a high note.Restaurant Management Software

This includes checking inventory before the day starts, taking note of what is working and what isn’t, and checking to see which employees are available to work current shifts. It’s also a good idea to post schedules where your employees can see them so that they can remain aware of their tasks for the week. An employee scheduling software can help you do that, but more on that later.

2. Remain Consistent

No one likes working under a manager who does not know his/her restaurant inside and out. The more consistent you are regarding your direction,, the more efficient and effective your team will be. In such cases, it would be a good idea to maintain flexible schedules that your team can depend on to get them through their shifts in peace.

Whatever you do, never play favorites! As soon as you start depending on or favoring a single employee, you undermine the remaining staff, demoralize them and make your management style unreliable. Refer to your employee manual when you have to deal with an unruly employee. Incidentally, you should ensure that all employees have access to your schedules each day so that operations can commence immediately. Remember, you are the manager; a little leadership will go a long way in ensuring you get the respect you need to guarantee a smooth service all day.

3. Keep Diners Coming Back for More

The last thing you want for your restaurant is unhappy diners. Make them return by giving them a dining experience that they cannot forget. Besides great food, you have to make sure that their experience remains positive from the time they walk in through the doors to the time they walk out. A fast and friendly service will go a long way in ensuring this scenario and a consistent service that will keep them coming.

Your staff will only perform as well as the schedules you make so make sure they remain updated and accessible. You can do that quickly and efficiently with a shift scheduling software such as Zip Schedules.
